SANDRA (1965)

This is the Luchino Visconti film SANDRA (OF A THOUSAND DELIGHTS), starring Claudia Cardinale, Jean Sorel and Michael Craig. A 1965 Italian release, SANDRA features Cardinale as a woman returning to her ancestral home in Volterra, a town in the Tuscany region of Italy. There, on the eve of a ceremony commemorating the death of her Jewish father, she revives an intimate involvement with her brother (Sorel), which troubles her American husband (Craig). The cast also includes French actress Marie Bell as Sandra's disturbed mother.

The movie was released as "Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa" in Italy, and as "Of a Thousand Delights" in the UK. The Italian title is taken from the poem "Le ricordanze" by Leopardi, and can be translated into English as "Glimmering stars of the Great Bear", or more colloquially as "Of a thousand delights". A Franco Cristaldi production, SANDRA won the Golden Lion (Grand Prize) at the 1965 Venice Film Festival. It was written by Suso Cecchi D'Amico, Enrico Medioli and Visconti, from their original story. Armando Nannuzzi was the director of photography.

SANDRA is available on both an Italian region 2 DVD from Sony, and a Japanese region 2 disc from Kinokuniya. The Sony DVD, though remastered, is cropped to 1.33:1 and pan-and-scanned. The disc does feature an English language dub, as well as the original Italian soundtrack with English subtitles.

In Italian with English subtitles.

"If You Forget Me" by Pablo Neruda

If you forget me
I want you to know
one thing.

You know how this is:
if I look
at the crystal moon, at the red branch
of the slow autumn at my window,
if I touch
near the fire
the impalpable ash
or the wrinkled body of the log,
everything carries me to you,
as if everything that exists,
aromas, light, metals,
were little boats
that sail
toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,
if little by little you stop loving me
I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly
you forget me
do not look for me,
for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,
the wind of banners
that passes through my life,
and you decide
to leave me at the shore
of the heart where I have roots,
remember
that on that day,
at that hour,
I shall lift my arms
and my roots will set off
to seek another land.

But
if each day,
each hour,
you feel that you are destined for me
with implacable sweetness,
if each day a flower
climbs up to your lips to seek me,
ah my love, ah my own,
in me all that fire is repeated,
in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,
my love feeds on your love, beloved,
and as long as you live it will be in your arms
without leaving mine.

POEMA

POEMA

Envelhecemos com as palavras ou elas
connosco

Marianne Rosenberg - Marleen

Marleen, one of us two has to go.
Marleen, so I beg you, please go, Marleen.

Your hair shines like a field of stars,
your lips are pure temptation.
Your complexion looks like from a magazine.
Like flower scent is every word
that come from your lips.
If he lusts for you, I can understand, Marleen.

Marleen, one of us two has to go.
Marleen, so I beg you, please go, Marleen.
Marleen, one of us two has to go.

I look at you and know that I
can not compare to you.
I'm not like that, not like you, Marleen.
A part from him belongs to her
but before I lose him for good,
please listen to me, listen to me, Marleen. Marleen!

Marleen, one of us two has to go.
Marleen, so I beg you, please go, Marleen.

What do you want from this man,
when you can have so many others?
Isn't he only a pastime for you?
I've only got one man, hmm,
will you let him go someday? Hmmm.

So he'd be gone forever.

Marleen, one of us two has to go.
Marleen, so I beg you, please go, Marleen.

Johannes Brahms - Piano Quartet No.3 "Werther" Op.60 - Complete

Brahms composed the first version of the work that would eventually become his Third Piano Quartet, Op. 60 (to which the subtitle "Werther" is often attached), in Dusseldorf in 1855-1856. The first version had emerged concurrently with first drafts for the first two piano quartets, Op. 25 and Op. 26, all received enthusiastically by his close friends, including Albert Dietrich and Joseph Joachim. At this point, No. 3 was in the key of C sharp minor. Even when (a year later) Joachim wrote to Brahms concerning the piece it still comprised three movements only, an opening Allegro, an Andante, and what Brahms' termed a "concise" finale. While its two sister works were completed in 1859 and 1861, Op. 60 was put aside, since neither Brahms nor his associates were satisfied with it. By 1869, he returned to it again and contemplated its publication as his Op. 54. But further extensive revisions followed and the quartet assumed its final shape in the winter of 1873-1874 in Vienna, with minor revisions the following summer. A letter from Brahms, sent with the manuscript to Theodor Billroth includes the following enigmatic comment: "the quartet has communicated itself to me only in the strangest ways...For instance, the illustration to the last chapter of the man in the blue frock and yellow waistcoat." This refers, somewhat obliquely, to Goethe's Werther, which Brahms admired. Meanwhile, he remained deeply dissatisfied with the work, and wrote to his publisher Fritz Simrock "you may attach a picture on the title page, i.e. a head with the pistol before it."

The definitive version is comprised of the 1855-1856 score's opening movement, a scherzo from 1856-1861, and an Andante and finale (allegro commodo) from 1875. The work, now in the general key of C minor, reflects the turbulent and vacillating self-doubts that Brahms felt so deeply. Indeed, little more darkly oppressive movements than the first exist anywhere else in Brahms' chamber output, while the "new" andante in E major is certainly one of the most beautiful. Above all, however, the work fully deserves its Goethe connections, for neither Brahms nor Werther enjoyed a contented course en route to their respective destinies.

The C minor Piano Quartet was first performed in Vienna on November 18, 1875, with Brahms himself at the piano, and members of the Hellmesberger Quartet.

Jónsi - Time to Pretend

I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, on the prime of my life
Let's make some music, some money, some wine
I'll move to Paris, the heroin on a star
You'll man the island, the cocaine and the car

This is our decision, live fast, die young
We've got a vision, now let's have some fun
Yes, it's overwhelming, but what can we do
Get jobs, wake up, commute

Forget about our mothers and our friends
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend

I'll miss the playgrounds, the animals and worms
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the world
I'll miss my sister and my father, my dog
I'll miss the boredom, the freedom, alone

There is nothing, nothing we can do
Love forgotten, life will start anew
Models, children, we'll divorce
We'll find more, everything runs its course

We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend
We're fated to pretend

Fated to... pretend
Fated to... pretend
Fated to... pretend
